Local Attractions/Lodging
What makes Rhode Island such an attractive place to live and work
is its rich history, natural beauty, and central location (only 1
hour from Boston and 3 hours from New York City).
Providence - Rhode Island’s capital city has
undergone a renaissance of sorts in the past few years, starring in
its own television show and earning recognition by CNN’s Money
Magazine in 2000 and 2001 as "The Best Place to Live in the East".
The city is a mix of the old and new. Providence is famous for its
beautifully preserved historic architecture throughout the city,
with more buildings on the National Historic Registry than anywhere
else. It is also home to Brown University, a three-centuries-old
institution attracting students from all over the world. The "new"
Providence features the Providence Place Mall, Riverwalk, outdoor
skating center, convention center, and a wide assortment of fine
restaurants.

Rhode Island - Although Rhode Island is the
smallest state in the United States (it takes just 45 minutes to
drive from one end to the other), it features more than 400 miles of
coastline. Popular seaside tourist destinations include Newport, a
sailing mecca rich with historic mansions, beaches, and spectacular
scenery, and Block Island, a pristine island town highlighted by a
National Wildlife Refuge and the 200-foot Mohegan Bluffs.

New England - New England is made up of six
states - Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New
Hampshire, and Maine - all within easy driving distance of one
another. New England is perhaps best known for its natural beauty
(especially at the change of seasons), miles of sandy beaches,
historic architecture, and fresh seafood.

Boston - Located about one hour from Woonsocket
(36 miles), Boston is New England’s largest city, home to Harvard
University, Faneuil Hall (renowned for its food and shopping),
Boston Red Sox, Boston Pops, Freedom Trail, and much more.

Local points of interest in Woonsocket include:
Stadium Theatre - This restored theater served
as the world-premiere venue for the popular comedy There’s Something
About Mary and Stuck On You, both films by Bobby and Peter Farrelly,
two local brothers turned Hollywood producers.
River Island Park - This downtown park offers an
attractive environment for a leisurely stroll. For a seasonal twist,
visitors can also launch a canoe on the Blackstone River or skate at
an outdoor rink.
World War II Memorial Park - Every fall, this
park is the site of Autumnfest, a showcase of local tradition,
including music, entertainment, and a parade through the city.
The Museum of Work and Culture - This
interactive museum tells the story of the history of labor and
immigration to Woonsocket, tracing the lives of mill workers who
came from the farms of Quebec in the latter part of the 19th century
to work in the shoe and textile factories of New England.
