Landmark Medical Center's third-annual Cancer Survivors' Day will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2008 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Woonsocket campus at 115 Cass Avenue. The event marks the nationwide recognition of National Cancer Survivors' Day, which is being celebrated in more than 700 locations nationwide and worldwide.
The free event is open to cancer survivors, caregivers, family members and friends, as well as healthcare professionals in the oncology field. This years theme is "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," and activities will include a catered lunch, DJ entertainment, games and giveaways, and guest speakers.
Landmark first joined in the worldwide celebration of National Cancer Survivors' Day in 2006. The local event is organized through the office of Ahmed Nadeem, M.D., who heads the Northern Rhode Island Hematology/Oncology Program, located at Landmark.
"Our event is a celebration of hope," said Phyllis Kelliher, nurse manager for the Northern Rhode Island Hematology/Oncology Program. "We're celebrating the strength and courage of all cancer survivors who demonstrate that life after a cancer diagnosis can be a reality, as well as recognizing the contributions that their families, friends, and caregivers have had in their lives."
"With all the advances in cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, many more people are living active, productive lives long after a cancer diagnosis," she continued. "Seeing these people and hearing their success stories gives hope and inspiration to others facing the same challenges."
Attendees need not be patients of Landmark Medical Center. Please RSVP to Phyllis Kelliher at (401) 769-4100, Ext. 2563. Sponsors include: Southern New England Regional Cancer Center; The Rhode Island Cancer Council, Inc.; American Cancer Society; and 21st Century C.A.R.E.
