Established in 2005, the
Northern Rhode Island Hematology/Oncology Program
provides state-of-the-art cancer treatment for adults. Using a multidisciplinary
approach, our team of caregivers all work together in order to best coordinate
patient care. We also work closely with staff at the
Southern New England Regional Cancer Center,
which provides radiation therapy services adjacent to our offices, as
well as the team of Landmark-affiliated physicians and surgeons. We pride

Meet the Medical Director of the Northern Rhode Island Hematology/Oncology Program:
Ahmed Nadeem, M.D. is the Medical Director of the Northern Rhode Island Hematology/ Oncology
Program. A graduate of King Edward Medical College in Lahore, Pakistan
with a M.D. and Bachelor of Surgery, he completed a residency in Internal
Medicine at Yale University and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at
Following his training, Dr. Nadeem was an attending physician at Memorial
Hospital of Rhode Island for two years, where he cared for patients with
many different types of cancer. He has been an Assistant Professor of
Medicine at Brown University since 2002, and is actively involved in training
Hematology/ Oncology fellows and medical students through Brown. He is
board certified in both Hematology/Oncology and Internal Medicine.
Dr. Nadeem has published numerous articles and abstracts about many types
of cancers, including esophagogastric, pancreatic, and head and neck.
He has also been the principal investigator of several research protocols.
In 2010, Dr. Nadeem was named a recipient of the American Cancer Society's
Lane W. Adams Award for outstanding caregivers. He is the first Rhode
Islander ever to win the prestigious national honor.
Meet the Department Chairman for Radiation Oncology
at Landmark Medical Center:
Timothy D. Shafman, M.D. graduated from Brandeis University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology.
He received his M. D. cum laude from Harvard Medical School where he attended
the Harvard University - Massachusetts Institute of Technology Division
of Health Sciences and Technology.
Dr. Shafman completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Brigham
and Women's Hospital in Boston, Mass. and a residency in Radiation
Oncology at the Harvard Joint Center for Radiation Therapy. He was elected
Chief Resident in his final year of Radiation Oncology training.
Following his training, Dr. Shafman was an attending physician at the Harvard
Joint Center for Radiation Therapy for five years. He then spent another
five years on the staff of Duke University Medical Center, Department
of Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Shafman has published more than 40 articles on a range of topics including
lung cancer, brain tumors, breast cancer and the genetics of radiation
sensitivity. He has also co-authored several book chapters in widely read
Radiation Oncology textbooks.
Dr. Shafman joined 21st Century Oncology in June 2004 and is the Medical
Director of the Rhode Island and Massachusetts regional networks, including
the Southern New England Regional Cancer Center, which is located on the
Woonsocket campus of Landmark Medical Center.
