History

We have been part of the fabric of our community for more than 140 years.

Landmark Medical Center was created in 1988 by the merging of the former Woonsocket Hospital and John E. Fogarty Memorial Hospital, two healthcare institutions that had been part of the fabric of Northern Rhode Island and the neighboring Massachusetts communities for more than 140 years.

Each year, more than 175,000 people rely on Landmark Medical Center for their healthcare needs. The 214-bed Woonsocket Unit provides emergency, diagnostic, cardiac, oncologic, medical, surgical, pain management, pediatric, obstetric, and rehabilitative care,

Landmark also owns and operates the Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island (formerly the Fogarty Memorial Hospital) and our well regarded Landmark Cancer Center is located at this facility. Landmark’s Heart Center, Wound Care Center and Occupational/Employee Health are located across from the Woonsocket Unit. Landmark is also affiliated with a network of physician offices throughout northern Rhode Island.

In December, 2013, Landmark Medical Center was purchased by Prime Healthcare Services, which has pledged millions of dollars in capital improvements, increase physician recruitment, and upgraded medical equipment, and to stabilize this vital community institution.
